We stayed in Banff and took the ski bus to Lake Louise
The Banff base gave us better evenings, but packing the night before and checking the last return bus made the ski days work.

We chose a hotel in central Banff and used the resort ski bus. The stop was only a few minutes away, but we were glad we found it in daylight on our first evening. We put boots, layers and breakfast things out the night before because the cold morning made every small delay feel longer.
The bus was comfortable and meant neither of us had to drive. The trade-off was the timetable: we checked the final return before skiing and kept an eye on the time in the afternoon. Banff gave us far more choice for dinner, and for us that was worth the daily transfer.
